Lucy Ton That (July 28th)

Posted on April 28, 2023December 4, 2023 by Lucy Ton That

Lucy Ton That ’26

Lucy Ton That—was born again at 2:38 pm
on July 28th, 2022 in Harvard,
Massachusetts when she jumped off of a
bridge with four strangers. The distance
between her two bodies was sixty feet,
captured by the rust and wooden slats of the
railway bridge and the murky river beneath
it. The old Lucy Ton That is somewhere
else—inhaling gorgeous fumes of hair dye
on the July porch / plucking individual
blades of grass on the lawn of 4th grade / in
between papery geometry notes / hiding
alone in the bathroom writing stories she’ll
forget about / averting her eyes from the
figure standing still, awkwardly naked after
it’s done and the heat of the moment has
gone cold. The water has facilitated her
rebirth, the mossy rocks whispered to her as
she swam upstream and climbed back up,
scaling the bridge—three strangers, one
lover, one Lucy. Falling is like flying and
the water was doom.
