Here at DOWN, we’ve noticed a terrible habit perpetuated on the daily of people putting men—-especially white men—on pedestals for doing the absolute bare minimum. Stop it. This is how it sounds:
“He genuinely has so much respect for women.” → man who held door open one time
“He actually has such a big heart.” → man who mentioned having a little sister once
“He’s a good person at the end of the day.” → man who’s actually not a good person but maybe believes in climate change
“You can just tell he has depth, like there’s so much more to him.” → man who changes Spotify playlist covers
“He’s really self-reflective, he’s so into working on himself.” → man who made Co-Star account
“He’s so smart.” → man who does Wordle (not even particularly well)
“He loves classic films, he’s really into art.” → man who watched the Godfather one (1) time
“He’s a feminist.” → man who doesn’t pay on dates
“He’s just really deep and introspective. Kind of intimidating!” → man who has literally never said anything
“No, no he’s different, he’s not like the guys he hangs out with.” → man who is exactly like the guys he hangs out with.
